You Get What You Give

I’d like to revisit a subject that I wrote about in 2009. The topic of getting as much out of something as we give is an area we could all stand to be reminded of. Not only as it pertains to pool, but with life in general. It’s not just about giving 100% but about not expecting more in return when we don’t. I could think of countless articles written with this very title.

I dedicate this month’s column to the late Ron Lyle. Ron was a Denver native and former heavy-weight boxing champion who was also a student and admirer of pool. He was frequently seen sweating matches along the rail at Felt Billiards in Englewood. He would watch and study the league players, the tournament players, and the money players. He appreciated the value of learning by watching.

After a loss in New York’s Madison Square Garden, Ron turned to his young fan from Colorado and said, “I’m sorry you came all this way to see me get beat, but the problem was, I didn’t take this guy serious enough.” He explained that no matter what you do in life, you won’t get more out of it than you put into it, referencing sports, jobs, and school. The young boy took Ron’s words to heart and later graduated high school with honors.

Ron was absolutely correct with his statement. Every single one of us could benefit from his words. When you take your opponent lightly, there’s a chance you will get punished. When you don’t do your best and give everything you have to that winning shot, it could cost you the game and possibly the match. Life is full of challenges and detours. You can never expect to get the most out of life if you aren’t giving just as much back, and more.
